Ian Kuhl

Manager, Waste Operations (Disposal) – Townsville Shire Council, Qld

Ian Kuhl completed a cadetship in Public Health through the Royal Society of Health (London) while working at Emerald Shire Council. Called up for National Service 1971, he graduated from Officer Training Unit, Scheyville then served in the Regular Army until 1992 in many medical and health postings throughout Australia, Papua New Guinea and South East Asia.

Ian has been involved in waste management in many locations and situations both civilian and the military, and has worked in waste management in disaster situations including cyclone cleanups, cholera outbreaks and the flu epidemic in Papua New Guinea in the early 70s’.

Ian holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Health and Tropical Medicine (James Cook University 1996) and a Graduate Certificate in Waste Management.

He currently manages the disposal of solid waste for Townsville City Council, with major projects being the development on new cells at three landfills, aligning of all licences after Council amalgamation, construction of a transfer station on an offshore island (Magnetic Island), construction of landfill gas infrastructure and automating data collection at gatehouses.

Sarah Langham

Account Manager, Mandalay Technologies

Sarah is the CS Waste Account Manager for Mandalay Technologies – responsible for maintaining ongoing contact with clients, managing the Operational Support Agreements, managing day-to-day business with her clients and working with them to provide long term solutions to their software needs. In order to achieve regular and useful contact with her clients and the industry, Sarah is an active member of LAWMAC and an attendee at most Waste Conferences. Sarah is passionate about excellent customer service, and maintaining and strengthening the relationships of Mandalay’s existing client base.

Rob McGahey

Senior Waste Industry Specialist, Asia Pacific Region – Caterpillar

Rob McGahey has been involved with the operation and management of waste facilities since 1995. During this time he has held a number of positions ranging from an operator of heavy equipment, Operations Supervisor to senior managerial positions in both transfer stations and landfills.

Rob has worked for Australian waste management companies including Pacific Waste Management and Thiess Services, and overseas for Veolia in Hong Kong and China.

Rob also spent 3 years working as an Operator Trainer for Hastings Deering, the Caterpillar dealer for Queensland and the Northern Territory.

Rob is presently based in Brisbane, Australia as Caterpillar Asia’s Senior Waste Industry Specialist for the Asia Pacific Region, acting as a consultant to dealers and customers involved in the waste industry and conducting specialised waste application training for equipment operators.

Dr David Moy

Managing Director, techSearch

Treasurer, Waste Management Association of Australia (Qld)

Dr David Moy runs a small consultancy techSearch Waste and Environment Services. He is also an Honorary Professor of the Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Health at Central Queensland University in Rockhampton. He lectures in the Master of Environment Management degree at CQU (Gladstone Campus) in Environmental Risk Management and Waste Minimisation and Cleaner Production.

David is a life member of the Waste Management Association of Australia and has held positions as Qld Branch President and National Vice President. He is currently treasurer of Qld Branch; Chair, WMAA Technical Reference Panel ; member National and State Carbon Committees and a judge of the Landfill Division’s Landfill Excellence Awards.

In a former life, David was Director of Griffith University’s Waste Management Research Unit; General Manager of the Communication Centre, QUT ; and a Supervising Scientist in the Biochemistry Branch of DPI’s Animal Research Institute – among other things!

David is a foundation member of Standards Australia’s(SA) QR11 Committee on the ISO 14000 Environmental Management Systems Standard. He continues to contribute to the development and reviews of a variety of SA and ISO standards and guidelines. These include auditing and implementing environmental and risk management systems; the greenhouse gas measurement and accounting; and the Social Responsibility working groups.

Keith Rickman

Mike Ritchie

Director, Mike Ritchie and Associates

Mike Ritchie is director of Mike Ritchie and Associates, which consults in the Environment, Waste and Carbon sectors. Until recently he was General Manager, Marketing and Communications at SITA Environmental Solutions.

He is president of the NSW branch of the Waste Management Association of Australia (WMAA), Vice President of the National Association and Chair of the National Carbon Committee (WMAA).

Mike works closely with waste generators and regulators to drive waste industry reform. He has a Bachelors of Science with Honours, a Masters in Science and an MBA. He is particularly interested in the economics of waste and the use of market based instruments.

His abiding interest is to achieve improved approaches to sustainability that are environmentally sound and economically rational.

Olivia Robertson

Product Manager – Waste Management, Mandalay Technologies

Prior to joining the Mandalay team in July 2009 as Product Manager – Waste Management, Olivia was the Waste Management Co-ordinator for Scenic Rim Regional Council and Beaudesert Shire Council. Olivia has 10 years experience in Victoria and Queensland local government in Waste, Public Health, Environmental Compliance and Pollution Prevention. Prior to her work in waste, she was part of the Disaster Management Response and Recovery in Waste, Public Health and Compliance for the Queensland Government, rolling out the public health response to Cyclone Larry. Olivia’s areas of interest lie in Landfill Management, CPRS, Environmental Compliance, Cleaner Production and Eco-efficiency. She is currently completing a Masters in Environmental Engineering.

Paul Theodorou

Product Development Manager, Mandalay Technologies

Paul has extensive experience with software and technology development, having designed and integrated large scale enterprise management systems for global product distribution and architected supplier network electronic exchanges for national and international markets. As Mandalay’s product development manager, he focuses his attention on the waste industry and the benefits that technology can create for waste data management through electronic data capture and auditability.
